He had been surrounded by them, all four of them, and finally he had let go. Finally, things were brought out into the open, things that he had been content to lock away and never let see the light of the moon. He had admitted to them all the feelings and desires that he was prepared to keep bottled up forever .... and had found acceptance.
Jaslene, whom he had wanted to help and comfort, but didn't know how. He hadn't wanted to push himself into her very private world. She had accepted him. Nikul....one of Belle's own, the epitomé of everything that his Master had told him he could never have without price, had accepted him. Shizu...dear naive Shizu, what had been a burning desire to connect with someone, veiled within the very real need to feed...was building into something more. It was unexpected, but he wasn' t going to question it. Then, there was Hikaru. He saw within this young vampire a shadow, a reflection similiar to his own. He had wanted to be closer to Hikaru from the beginning, but mistakes had been made, punishments meted out and then distance had grown. But now...all was out in the open. They all knew what he felt, what he wanted. And they had not turned away. There were no words to describe how what he felt within. Perhaps relief, perhaps hope....perhaps now he could put Brandon's memory to rest and not feel his heart ache from that missing piece.
But that rare moment had been brought to a screeching halt with the ring of one cell phone. He knew what Ra was going to request of him, just not the details. He would not show frustration to the Master, nor annoyance. He understood Ra's need to send him on these trips away and was glad to do so. Ra's animal to call, his *mera 'azeez* was missing. Yes, Lerochelle was the Lupa to the local wolf pack and needed to be returned, but Ra's reasons had, perhaps, more personal undertones to them. And so, he had found himself on his way to Salt Lake City, Utah to meet with a contact there and discuss what had been discovered ... or not discovered.
It was a four hour flight from Schenectady County Airport to Salt Lake City International. Time would have to be taken to play the vampiric political game once there, greeting that Master and assuring her that nothing more than information gathering was happening. Yes, there were bargains discussed, deals made, promises given, all for the sake of finding Lerochelle. In the time that was left of that night, Aydryan fulfilled them all as he promised Ra that he would. The currency had been his body and his gift, both of which were easily supplied, but in the back of his mind there remained only four people that mattered to him.
The next evening fell and no time was wasted in meeting with the contact. Disappointment was all that could be felt when the news had been given. No one had seen anyone fitting the description of the Lupa. No bodies had turned up in any hospital or morgue. The flight in question had been investigated and so far nothing suspicious or conclusive had been discovered. They were at a dead end. In less than an hour, Aydryan completed his task, had given his and Ra's departing wishes and thanks to the Master of Utah and once again boarded a plan. This time ... to home.
Now he was on his black and red motorcycle roaring through the Catskills at speeds no human would think of driving at. The raw rock that had been cut to make the passages of the road passed by in a blur, dotted with determined trees growing from their faces and trickling waterfalls. The night air was sweet as it rushed around him, hair blowing like a bloody flag behind him. He wanted to reach Wood Bourne quickly, give Ra his report and then go in search of Jas, Hik, Nik and Shiz. Despite the fact that his news was not good, he couldn't stop the smile that curved his lips as he drove. Even in the deepest dark, he had found the glimmer of four stars to light his way.
